Tooth decay is the most common oral disease affecting children and young people in England, but it is preventable!

Sugar is one of the main contributors to tooth decay. This is because bacteria in the plaque feeds on the sugar which can then cause issues with teeth. This is why brushing your teeth is so important - to get rid of the sugar! 

Recommendations

Children aged 4-6 years should have a maximum of 19g (5 sugar cubes) of added sugar per day and 7-10 year olds should be having a maximum of 24g (6 sugar cubes) of added sugar per day and those aged. Those who are 11+ years old should be having a maximum of 30g (7 sugar cubes) of added sugar per day.

So what is added sugar?

When we talk about added sugar or free sugar, this is when sugar has been added to a product to make it sweeter. Added sugar is in a lot of the foods and drinks we have, some examples include:

  • Cakes

  • Some Fruit Yogurts

  • Tomato Ketchup

  • Coca Cola

You may not necessarily realise that these foods are high in sugar, which is why it is always good to check the labels. Especially savory foods!

FACT: Almost 9 out of 10 hospital tooth extractions among children aged 0 to 5 years are due to preventable tooth decay and tooth extraction is still the most common hospital procedure in 6 to 10 year olds.

Food Labels

We will provide a whole news page article on how to read food labels and what it all means but one of the most important things is that you are keeping within the green zone as much as possible, and only dipping into the red zones every now and then. For sugar, you should be looking at food products that are under 5g per 100g. For more information on how to read food labels, click here
